Welcome to the Groundwork Birmingham & Solihull website!

Groundwork Birmingham & Solihull is one of fifty Trusts that make up the national Groundwork Federation.  Our purpose is to build sustainable communities in areas of need through joint environmental action.  In this way, we believe we can change places and change lives for the better. 

Although we work across the whole of Birmingham and Solihull, our efforts are focused on the areas of greatest deprivation.  Our approach is to involve local residents, and especially young people, in improving their living environment.  We then seek to pass on the skills and knowledge needed to ensure that the work that we have started together brings lasting benefits to their community. 

We have the widest possible understanding of what constitutes the environment - we think of it as everything that faces you when you open your front door.  This includes not just the natural and built elements but also other people and their actions. 

We believe that the environment is a powerful shared concern around which often very diverse communities can come together.  The benefits are not just those of improved recreational space for adults and for children, vitally important though these are in enhancing quality of life.  Our past experience tells us that working with communities on environmental concerns can also help to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour, reducing littering and graffiti, improve health and learning and advance racial harmony. 

The Groundwork Birmingham & Solihull group also includes two other closely related parts of the organisation.  Groundwork Environmental Business Services is a West Midlands regional business unit advising local businesses on securing savings through energy efficiency, becoming a good corporate citizen and legislative compliance.  Groundwork Environmental Services Ltd is the trading arm of the charitable Trust, carrying out environmental improvements on a competitive commercial basis and covenanting its profits to the charity.
